About the Role
Roll Call is looking for a detail-oriented reporter with the ability to break news, analyze developments in Congress and its related agencies and communicate it clearly. The preferred candidate will produce daily and enterprise news relating to both chambers of Congress, including its leadership figures, behind-the-scenes politics, and the important issues that affect the public most.
An ability to work in a fast-paced and evolving environment is necessary. Source development is crucial. Strong writing and editing skills are required. We want a reporter who has strong critical-thinking skills, knows how to spot a unique story angle that no one else has thought and can translate creativity into content. Participating in multi-platform content —– including videos and podcasts — is an integral part of the job.
- Develop and write timely stories within deadlines
- Cultivate and maintain news sources and monitor developments in the news
- Identify photographs and graphics to illustrate stories
- Budget stories and maintain a calendar of key dates and events in assigned coverage areas
- Make media appearances to promote your work and Roll Call
- 3+ years of experience writing for a news organization
- Strong research, interviewing, writing and multimedia skills
- Proficiency in social media to promote content, develop sources and interview subjects
- An ability to adapt to new technologies
- A proven track record of meeting strict deadlines
- A bachelor’s degree (preferably in journalism or a related field)
